When we are walking, travelling on a train or driving a car, sitting in a park, in a garden or at the beach, we can choose to listen. Technology enables us to listen to our favourite playlist, radio show, podcast or audio book wherever we are. Multi-tasking (travelling and listening) is one of my favourite things. Getting some extra steps in and learning at the same time!
“The way we spend our time defines who we are”
Jonathan Estrin
Audio is such a powerful medium – has anyone watched the recently release award-winning Sound of Metal? It is a looking glass into how living with hearing loss is isolating and how one man learns to find a way through. A brilliant film asking some challenging questions.
Podcast listening in the UK has climbed year on year and it looks like in 2021 the numbers will have nearly doubled since 2017. From 8.9million to 16.76million, it is popular with a younger demographic with close to 40 percent of UK listeners aged 26 to 35 listening to podcasts on a weekly basis. The Autumn Team picks
What are you choosing to listen to? The choice is now HUGE. We all have our favourites in the Autumn Live team.
Jasmine is into ‘How to Fail’ with Elizabeth Day, a podcast that celebrates the things that haven’t gone right. Each week a new interviewee explores what their failures taught them about how to succeed better.
Grace is listening to a couple: The BEMA podcast which is a walk-through of the context of the Bible and the text itself, as well as surrounding history. And Grounded with Louis Theroux where Louis is using the lockdown to track down some high-profile people he’s been longing to talk to – from all walks of life and on both sides of the Atlantic.
Mikey is listening to: The Team Deakins podcast – an ongoing conversation between acclaimed cinematographer Roger Deakins and James Deakins, his collaborator, about cinematography, the film business and whatever other questions are submitted. Alongside Empire Film Club, Bridgetown Audio, The Low Expectations and Inside the Studio by Steadfast Collective. There must be a lot of travelling for Mikey!
And Simon is listening to: Unlocking Us with Brené Brown and Simon Sinek’s “A bit of optimism”. Both are about getting insights into how we can all change a perception, a behaviour or belief to create a better world around us.
I think we’re all screen fatigued right now. A traditional telephone call, listening to an audio book or popping into Clubhouse and listening to some excellent conversations there are energising and refreshing.
Launching our own podcast
We’ve spent some time at Autumn Live interviewing some incredible guests, as part of our own podcasting. We’re pleased to say the first four episodes of The Shared Experience podcast, hosted by Autumn Live, are now live!
At Autumn Live one of our core values is relationship – how human connection and the power of shared experience enables positive change. We believe sharing experiences are one of the core things that make us feel connected and make us human.
Many of us have had moments in our lives when we have realised something, been inspired or deeply moved by a shared experience. These are often face to face but increasingly digitally too. Sharing experiences during lockdown life has meant many of us have found new ways to connect and feel connected. And, as we emerge many of us are wondering, what will our new shared experiences look like?
The Shared Experience Podcast will look at a host of topics and chat with a wide variety of people, but we will always draw back to our shared experiences, as humans. The Shared Experience Podcast explores our connections together with people, organisations and change.
Or one of the first episodes with Katie Street, Founder of Street Agency
Simon Harmer, Founder of creative agency Thursday
Liana Fricker, Inspirer in Chief at The Inspiration Space
Mark Rowland, Chief Exec at Mental Health Foundation
We’re just in the process of editing the next few episodes and prepping them for release. You can find them anywhere you choose to listen to your podcasts. If you like it, please subscribe and rate us (5* if you really like it!)
We’d love to know which one was your favourite?
